Sunday, January 24th, 2010 What an asshole.
EDIT: For the record, I don’t REALLY think James is an asshole. On the contrary, I love him very much. Not that you can’t love assholes. But James isn’t an asshole. He’s actually pretty terrific.
And as I’m sure you’re expecting, this record is going to be fucking awesome. Fact.

OUT OF THE FRYING PAN…
Thursday, January 21st, 2010After walking out of the studio on Monday with LP1 all finished we took a day to regroup and then got to work on a new The Juan Maclean song at HG! HQ!. Juan, now with full grown disco-beard, brought his “axe” (The Roland D110) so Alex could lay down some “piano.” That was easy enough, but the real fun ensued when we started scrolling through some of the horn presets. Beautiful.
Juan tracked a particularly difficult Wurlitzer part.
And Juan and DJ came up with an interpretive dance for Nando’s vocals.
REALLY, REALLY MISSING JERRY TONIGHT

Caroline v. The Chorus Echo
Monday, January 18th, 2010Just as mixing our record was coming to an end we all decided that one of the songs needed to be completely retracked in order to better suit Alex’s vocal range. Thanks to superstar producer Chris Zane, the daunting task proved relatively easy. The only wild card was that the frighteningly talented Caroline Polachek from Chairlift had sung on the demo and she was off on tour in Australia.
Ever the trooper, the likely completely jetlagged Caroline came in at the 11th hour, reverse engineered her crazy harmonies from the original, transposed everything to the new key and resang her part better than ever (which is saying a lot because it was pretty amazing before). Here we try and recreate the effect we used on her vocals in the demo – taking a stereo mix of all her vocals and using a Roland Chorus Echo as a tape recorder. This proved a bit tricky because our trusty Space Echo is a little worse for wear these days…
But after some trial and error we got it. Here Chris puts the now tape-saturated Caroline back out on the board to try out some different reverbs. And it sounds pretty awesome, we think.
ALL GROWN UP
Monday, January 18th, 2010Our boy Tim turns 10 years old, and talks about it here. I’m sure you know that BiS is the best radio show in the world, but you may not know that if it wasn’t for Tim “Hold On” may never have come out. It’s a long story that some of the involved parties might dispute, but it’s true.
We love you Tim. Here’s to 10 more.
